AI safety & governance research

Intelligence
is collective.
Its future
should be, too.

How can increasingly capable AI remain accountable to people? We are building a research programme in data provenance, participatory alignment and benefit-sharing.

A place to ask
the structural questions.

Beyond is an independent research initiative in Zürich, building a laboratory for AI safety and decentralized governance.

Our agenda connects technical AI governance with human oversight and collective decision-making. We ask how people can inspect AI systems, shape their objectives and challenge consequential decisions. Decentralized governance means sharing decision-making authority with clear responsibilities, safeguards against capture and ways to resolve disputes.

Our long-term motivation is to help preserve meaningful human oversight as AI capabilities advance. From Switzerland, in the heart of Europe, we are developing testable studies and assembling research collaborations. Our next step is dedicated, grant-funded research.

Three directions.
Accountable AI governance.

Who contributes?
Who decides?
Who benefits?

THE QUESTION

Can we trace
the data behind
a model?

Data provenance is a foundation for AI auditability: recording where data came from, how they were transformed and which actors were involved. We propose to test how dataset-to-model traceability supports incident investigation and accountable oversight.

Research focus
Dataset lineage, provenance integrity, audit trails and privacy-preserving access to records for AI oversight.
Proposed study
Prototype a versioned dataset-to-model record. Compare it with ordinary dataset documentation using deliberately missing records, altered files and conflicting permission claims.
Evaluation
Measure lineage coverage, detection of introduced inconsistencies, investigation time and sensitive information exposed by the record.
Safety connection
Support incident investigation with verifiable records. Provenance alone cannot establish model safety, detect every data-poisoning attack or prove the truth of recorded claims.

Our proposed programme connects AI safety, technical governance and collective decision-making. Each study will specify a threat model, evaluation protocol and measurable outcomes. These pilots are not evidence of safety for frontier AI or future AGI. Read the research rationale and selected literature.

Small enough to test.
Open enough to build on.

Our proposed way of working pairs a precise research question with a concrete, reviewable output.

  1. 01

    Frame the question

Specify the use context, affected people, potential harms and threat model. Define assumptions and success criteria before testing.

    RESEARCH BRIEF
  2. 02

    Build and evaluate

Compare against simple baselines and test failure cases. Report uncertainty, differences across groups and limits to generalisation.

    TESTABLE WORK
  3. 03

    Publish what we learn

Document methods, negative results and limitations. Share reproducible materials where consent, privacy and misuse risks permit.

    PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE

Fund the work.
Make the process
accountable.

We welcome foundations, grantmakers and research partners interested in AI safety, accountable governance and broadly shared benefits.

Discuss a research grant

Research needs time.
We are building the structure
to make that time possible.

01 / PEOPLE

Grants would support researchers working on agreed questions, with defined deliverables and milestones.

02 / OPERATIONS

Beyond would coordinate contracts, researcher payments and project administration through the Swiss association.

03 / TRANSPARENCY

Research costs and administrative fees would be itemised and agreed with each funder before a project begins.

Project budgets, reporting arrangements and any administrative fee are agreed per grant.

Built through
conversation.

Before the lab initiative, there were the AI Talks: eight gatherings at Beyond Space in Zürich, bringing people together to discuss artificial intelligence.
